Mere days after hitting the internet with the most divisive corporate rebrand since the Post Office changed its name, Jaguar has shown us a car. It’s called the Type 00 concept and it’s… well, you decide.
Here’s everything we know so far: • Type 00 “showcases Jaguar’s vibrant new identity” • It’s a two-door coupe with no rear window and no chance of ever being made… • …instead, Jaguar’s first production car will be a four-door electric GT, we're told • Said production car will take some styling inspiration from the Type 00, though • Type 00 has butterfly doors and a ‘pantograph’ tailgate – fancy hinges, basically • “00” name represents zero tailpipe emissions and the concept’s “status as car zero in our new lineage” • Interior is split into two, with each side getting a huge retractable touchscreen • Concept shown in two colours: Miami Pink and London Blue. Click the gallery above to see both • Production model is due in “late 2025”, built in the UK, and with a claimed 478-mile battery range • Jaguar no longer sells new cars in the UK, and will reposition itself as an eclectic and high-end electric brand

Design and models available

Whatever you make of Jaguar’s rebrand, in a strict “all publicity is good publicity” sense it couldn’t have gone any better. The Type 00 here has become the most highly anticipated concept since Newton saw an apple hit the ground; nobody really cares about concept cars, usually.
Jaguar… sorry, ‘JaGUar’… reckons this is “a fearless statement. An object of desire. A concept with bold forms and exuberant proportions to inspire future Jaguars.” The Type 00 also, according to the company, “recaptures its original ethos to copy nothing.” And broadly, that seems like a fair comment: to our knowledge, no car’s rear has ever been inspired by an air conditioning unit. (Jaguar calls it a “boat tail”. But it didn’t copy a boat. Obviously.)

Interior and tech

As you can probably tell, the Type 00’s interior is pure Photoshop, and not one part of it will make a production car. That said, there’ll undoubtedly be bits that Jaguar will point to in future as the inspiration behind certain design motifs, albeit watered down for production. For instance, the concept’s cabin is separated longitudinally by three “hand-finished brass lines". They'll be physically difficult to transpose to a production car, but they could (and probably will) be replicated as interior trim parts.
Here are some words from JaGUar’s chief interior designer about the whole thing: “Just as on the outside, deployable technologies are a hallmark of the interior. Screens glide silently and theatrically from the dashboard, while powered stowage areas slide open softly on demand, revealing hidden splashes of exuberant colour. We believe technology should enhance the modern luxury experience, not dominate the architecture, and the digital screen at the centre of the dashboard is an example of this philosophy. The Clearsight display replaces the traditional rear-view mirror, improving overall visibility.” Indeed.

Batteries and range

As per the bullet points above, the Type 00 won’t make production, but JaGUar has taken the opportunity to tell us that the company's "first reimagined production car” will be an electric four-door GT (a fancy family car, that is). Due in late 2025 and built in the UK, it’ll be built on a brand-new chassis (also developed by JaGUar), with a target battery range of almost 500 miles. We’re told it can add 200 miles of charge in just 15 minutes.

Price and release

The grandiloquent press release that accompanies the Type 00 – which we’re instructed to pronounce “zero zero” – makes no mention of a price. Or anything of much substance, to be honest. But we do find out a bit about “Jaguar’s new creative philosophy”. It’s three-fold, apparently. To quote...
1. Exuberant: vibrant, uninhibited and fearless. In the vehicles it creates and moments it curates 2. Modernist: future-facing, curious and inspired by the world. Respectful of the past, not dictated by it 3. Compelling: holistic, sensory and extraordinary. Generating meaningful connections with clients So there. Words and stuff.

What other cars from Jaguar are due?

We’re in the dark on this one, but Jaguar has already said that this is the first of a family of new cars. Plus it’s spent all the necessary time and money developing a new electric platform to underpin them. After the initial four-door GT, we can expect an SUV (obviously), probably another SUV that’s bigger or smaller than the first one, and then an electric sportscar that Jaguar will call “the spiritual successor to the E-Type.” There’s unlikely to be a spiritual successor to the X-Type, sadly.
