It’s been over a decade since mainstream electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe made their debut, yet range and charging are still hot topics when it comes to the switch from petrol to electric. So, what better way to settle the debate than a long-distance race.
In this video Rory Reid gets behind the wheel of the all-electric Audi S e-tron GT, while Alex Legouix fires up the RS7's V8 petrol engine. Starting at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire and driving to Dunsfold Aerodrome nearly 300 miles away the pair must make the journey without topping up on fuel or electricity. If this wasn’t enough, once they arrive at their final destination they must have enough range in reserve to complete five laps of the track before an overall winner can be crowned. On paper both cars should be evenly matched. The 630 horsepower RS7 claims to do 366 miles on a full tank, whilst the S e-tron GT has 680 horsepower and an official range of 374 miles, but how will this play out in practise? Rory and Alex take very different approaches to compete their hypermiling challenge using every trick in the book to drive economically. Will they fight fair, or will they be tempted to bend the rules? You’ll have to watch the video to find out and learn which strategy pays off overall. If you enjoyed this video give it a like and let Rory and Alex know whether you prefer the e-tron GT or RS7 in the YouTube comments. You can also subscribe for more like it.
