The Land Rover Defender is a British icon and, after the original went out of production in 2016, excitement for its replacement has been building. Rory got a sneak preview of the new Defender already and, if you haven’t seen that video yet, it’s well worth checking out to get up to speed with the new car’s technology and features. Because in this one he’s driving it, on-road and – crucially – through some good old-fashioned British mud too.
That’s important because, while 4x4s have moved from the countryside and into the cities and suburbs, the Defender needs to prove it can still get mud on its wellies while operating as a modern SUV too. One with a few more creature comforts than the defiantly basic and old-fashioned original. Quirky and characterful as it was time has moved on and Land Rover’s challenge is to channel that spirit faithfully but make it work for a modern audience. Has it worked? Will Rory’s “Please be good, please be good, please be good…” hopes from the first video be realised? Time to find out.
