Think hybrids and the first cars springing to mind will likely be things like the OG Toyota Prius, the Uber driver’s favourite and a pioneer of electric assistance in the name of economy. Or, perhaps, the tax-friendly plug-in hybrids designed to save company car drivers on their monthly Benefit In Kind bill thanks to their low CO2 figures.
Not sports cars. Certainly not the Porsche 911. But here we are, and in the brave new world even Porsche’s iconic sports car needs a little help from electric motors to stay relevant, legal and – of course – at the head of the pack. Porsche being Porsche it hasn’t just used hybrid power to make the new GTS Rory drives here more efficient, cleaner and compliant with ever more stringent emissions regulations. It’s also used this as an opportunity to make it even faster and more responsive. The way it’s achieved this is, inevitably, rather complicated. But thankfully Rory is on hand to both explain how it’s been done, and then demonstrate it to the full on the race track. And if you thought going hybrid has meant the 911 has had to grow up and get all sensible and responsible … think again! We’ll hand over to Rory for the full story, which you can watch at the link above.
