BMW’s M division seems to have rediscovered its love of estates, having sworn it would never build one again after poor sales of the last M5 Touring it built back in 2007. But off the back of rave reviews for its M3 Touring and demand from customers it’s decided the time is right for another M5 Touring.
Rory’s got just 90 minutes to find out if it stands a better chance of success than its predecessor. And can take the fight to the undisputed heavyweight champion of the hot estate car world, the fearsome Audi RS6 Avant… Like the M5 Saloon, the new Touring version packs a lot of punch. And a lot of technology. The new hybrid powertrain combines a turbocharged petrol V8 engine with a serious electric boost for a combined output of 727 horsepower and 1,000Nm. First port of call on this time-limited test? Why, the derestricted German Autobahn, of course! With that out of his system Rory then digs deeper into the M5 Touring’s abilities to pose the question whether it channels the magic of its smaller M3 Touring brother and is, perhaps, the pick of the range. Or if you’d actually be better off with its all electric i5 Touring equivalent, the M60 xDrive version of which has a pretty impressive 593 horsepower output itself. Join him to find out but hurry up – the clock is ticking! And once you’ve done that don’t forget to subscribe to the channel for more great videos from Rory, hit like and then have your say on the new BMW M5 Touring in the comments thread below.
