2024 is MG’s 100th Birthday, so to celebrate it had a starring role at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The company used the opportunity to unveil an all-new MG HS. The current model is one of the top selling cars in the UK and the new version looks set to give buyers more of what they love. With increased interior space, updated tech and a plug-in hybrid claiming an impressive all-electric range, it continues to major on value for money.
• The 2024 HS gains a new look inside and out, along with a tech upgrade • A plug-in hybrid option promises up to 75 miles of electric-only range • The HS is MG’s largest SUV, sitting above the ZS in the line-up • Order books are open now with deliveries expected by the end of July • Prices starting from £24,995

Design and models available

The new design of the HS looks more in line with the style of MG’s latest cars. A large grille spans across the front of the car emphasising its increased width, while the thin headlight clusters are joined by a black strip across the car’s nose. At the back the design follows the same pattern by visually joining the lights together with the shape of the trim. The car is not only wider, but also longer too, so it should feel more spacious inside, yet the height has been reduced to make the HS appear sleeker.

Interior and tech

The changes to the overall dimensions of the car have made it roomier inside and provided the boot with an extra 44 litres of capacity. There’s a new steering wheel and the HS now comes with two 12.3-inch screens, one for the driver’s display and the other for the infotainment. The latter supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and range-topping Trophy cars will also get wireless phone charging and a 360-degree camera. The HS comes with a whole host of safety and driver assistance features as standard including emergency braking, lane keeping assistance and blind spot monitoring. Additionally, even the entry-level SE cars come with rear parking sensors and camera, electrically adjustable front seats, and keyless entry so you’ll get plenty of kit for your money. If you do treat yourself to a plug-in hybrid Trophy level car, you’ll get the benefit of vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, allowing you to use the battery to power other electrical devices.

Batteries/range and engines

You’ll get two engine options for the new HS. Like the existing version, the newly updated 1.5-litre petrol engine will be offered as either a manual or an automatic. Then there’s the plug-in hybrid which will have an impressive claimed range of up to 75 miles. This combined with its low official scores for emissions, puts the plug-in hybrid HS in a very appealing five per cent Benefit In Kind bracket for company car drivers. For people able to charge at home this could result in very low running costs as most journeys could be covered by electric power alone.

Price and release

You can already order the new HS. The petrol models start from £24,995 and are expected to arrive by the end of July, while the plug-in hybrids begin at £31,495 with deliveries to showrooms scheduled for the end of September.

What other cars from MG are due this year?

MG displayed its electric convertible the Cyberster at Goodwood alongside this new HS. It also unveiled a concept car called the Cyber GTS, teasing us with what a future electric coupe based on the Cyberster might be like. Additionally, MG has recently brought us an all-new MG3 and we’d expect a new ZS to be in the pipeline to complete the line-up.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

All MGs currently offer impressive value for money making it difficult for rivals to compete on price. However, there’s plenty of other family SUVs buyers may consider including the recently facelifted Nissan Qashqai, Skoda’s Karoq and the Renault Austral.
