Aston Martin has finally revealed its all-new Vanquish — from what we’ve seen so far it was worth the wait. The original Vanquish was a big deal when it launched in 2001. Not only was it the second Aston Martin ever to feature a V12 engine, but it also had a starring role alongside Pierce Brosnan in the James Bond movie Die Another Day. Following in the footsteps of the DB5, the DBS and the V8 Volante, the Vanquish secured its place as an icon. However, it’s been a while since an Aston Martin carried the name and now — six years after the second generation ended production — the Vanquish has returned. It certainly looks the part and its twin-turbo V12 engine enables it to reach the highest top speed of any road-going Aston Martin so far.
• The new Vanquish will be the flagship of Aston Martin’s line-up sitting above the Vantage and DB12 • With a 5.2-litre V12 twin-turbo engine it has been tuned to offer both performance and luxury • It has a 0-62mph time of 3.3 seconds and 835 horsepower • First deliveries expected in Autumn • Pricing has not been confirmed by it will likely start at around £350,000

Design and models available

Pictured here in Supernova Red the design of the Vanquish is instantly recognisable as Aston Martin. To our eyes the Vanquish looks impactful and elegant with its wider front grille, its longer bonnet, and its distinctive side strakes giving it an almost shark-like appearance. The wheelbase is 8cm longer than the previous car to give it a longer, sleeker nose and Aston Martin describes the car as having a “teardrop form” flowing from front to back inspired by race cars. The new Vanquish comes with a panoramic roof as standard which is tinted to alleviate the need for a blind. It also has the latest matrix LED headlight pattern to match the new Vantage. At the back an integrated spoiler flicks up over the rear ‘shield’, which is flanked by the LED taillight strips. Quad tailpipes and a chunky diffuser below finishing the design.

Interior and tech

Inside a mixure of dials and switches provide physical controls for things such as the gear selector and driving modes, while a 10.25-inch screen is used for the infotainment. These all sit low down between the two seats creating a cocooning effect. The driver gets their own 10.25-inch display and there’s wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto in addition to the built-in 3D mapping. All cars come with Sports Plus seats like the tan ones in the press images, or you can opt for carbon fibre Performance ones. A Bowers & Wilkins sounds system with 15 speakers is another standard feature and then there’s an endless list of material and colour options to make the Vanquish your own. You can also add accessories such as a matching golf bag or a luggage set.

Engines

The Vanquish features a V12 5.2-litre twin-turbo engine which produces 835 horsepower. This results in a 0-62mph time of 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 214mph — the highest of any production Aston Martin to date. It uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox and promises to provide immediate power with a fancy new electronic rear differential and stability programme helping to make it more agile. Whether you prioritise comfort or performance the Vanquish has a series of driving modes to choose from along with separate settings allowing you to tweak the tone of the exhaust from a modest burble to a roaring crescendo.

Price and release

To keep the Vanquish exclusive Aston Martin will be limiting the production run to under 1,000 per year and first deliveries are expected this Autumn. Aston Martin has not shared an official starting price itself, but we expect the Vanquish to be in the region of £350,000.

What other cars from Aston Martin are due this year?

Aston Martin has already brought us a new Vantage this year. This, like the Vanquish, gains more power than before aiming to balance grand tourer comfort with sports car performance.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

The Aston Martin Vanquish is a car you’ll buy with your heart, and it has very little direct competition. That said, the Ferrari 12Cilindri looks remarkably similar on paper. It too boasts a V12 engine, produces 830 horsepower and will set you back around £350,000. While other manufacturers like Lamborghini and Bentley have moved into the new era of hybrid supercars, the Vanquish and the 12Cilindri are a last hurrah for the V12 engine and, as such, will be close rivals.
