Polestar’s fastest model to date has been unveiled as an electric SUV-coupé, the Polestar 4. With it, the brand introduces various features influenced by the Polestar Precept, a future-led concept car set to hit the roads as the Polestar 5 in 2024. The Polestar 4, meanwhile, goes on sale early next year.
The Polestar 4 combines some innovative and distinctive features in the name of safety and sustainability, and also introduces some distinctive new design features like the removal of the rear screen. Instead the glass roof simply stretches rearwards and down behind the rear seat passengers. There's no conventional rear-view mirror either, this replaced by a camera-generated image of what's behind you. Sustainability developments include more recycled materials inside - part of what Polestar calls a 'circular economy' - that lowers the carbon footprint without compromising luxury.

The Polestar 4 taps into the growing trend for SUV/coupe mash-ups seen in everything from the Peugeot 408 to BMW X4 to Porsche Cayenne Coupe. Polestar argues the combination of a high-riding car with a sloping roofline offers the best of both worlds in terms of spaciousness and aerodynamics. Taller passengers riding in the back have tended to disagree as they find their heads pressed against the ceiling, but Polestar claims there's ample headroom in the back of the Polestar 4.
Those riding in the back also have access to reclining seats, adjustable lighting and their own media and climate control settings thanks to a screen positioned between the front seats. The interior is also a showcase for so-called mono-materials (multiple materials that can be recycled together), carpets made from reclaimed fishing nets and other more sustainably sourced materials to reduce the overall plastic waste of the vehicle. Fully recycled, tailored knit upholstery will also feature in the car for the first time.

Given the model’s frameless windows, low nose at the front, retractable door handles and optimised air flow, the Polestar 4 is impressively aerodynamic. That will help make the most of the impressive e 544 horsepower while also contributing to a targeted range of up to 350 miles. It also features a new drive optimisation function where drivers can switch between performance and range. So, whilst drivers can enjoy the sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds, sharper handling and heightened response they can also opt for a smoother and calmer experience in range mode, where the rear motor kicks in to optimise range efficiency.
