Long waiting times for charging electric cars might become a thing of the past. That’s if Nyobolt’s new, ultra-fast charging technology can pave the way for cheaper, mass market electric cars to do the same in a few years’ time. And if you don’t know who Nyobolt is, get to know, as it could be changing the way we use our EVs in the future.
Based in Cambridge, the firm has invested heavily in its new battery technology, which launches with the head-turning claim of a full charge in just six minutes – way quicker than anything else in the market at the moment and, combined with a range of around 150 miles, opening up a new level of usability. This in turn means smaller batteries can be used, making electric cars potentially lighter and cheaper as well as reducing the quantity of raw materials used to make them. All good news. While details of exactly how it works are scarce (and prompting much speculation) there are questions of just how viable charging times this quick will prove. To that point Nyobolt says these incredible charging speeds can be achieved “with the existing infrastructure”, though it doesn’t go into specifics. For those EV owners out there, you can probably relate to the frustration of having to wait for your car to charge and it still remains one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today. Nyobolt’s concept car demonstrates a huge step towards matching the convenience we currently enjoy with conventionally fuelled cars. And if the eye-catching looks vaguely familiar that’s because the concept car used to launch the tech is a reimagined Series 1 Lotus Elise, the looks given a makeover by one of the designers of the original – Julian Thomson. With weight saving promised as one of the major benefits the fit with the famously lightweight Lotus seems a good fit, likewise the benefits in performance and handling this brings. While it remains unclear when this new tech will be available in a car you can buy Nyobolt says its technology will go into production at the start of 2024. Watch this space!
