While we liked the VW ID.Buzz for bringing all-electric power to the van-based people carrier sector it does rather put style before content, with disappointing load capacity and seating options. Into that steps the new Ford E-Tourneo, a fully electric version of the next-generation Transit Custom with a claimed 230 miles of range, seating for up to eight people and an endlessly configurable interior perfect for both business users and active families alike.
As we’ve been finding out for ourselves , ‘civilian’ vans make great family cars for those needing to carry lots of people or stuff, and growing numbers of people are making the switch from ‘SUVs’ into vehicles that genuinely do support sports and utility in one vehicle.
Where the ID.Buzz falls down with its lack of child seat mounts on all three second-row seats and inability to configure the interior for different arrangements, the Tourneo uses a rail-based system with endless possibilities. The three separate second row seats all have their own ISOFIX and seatbelts, while the third row is split 2:1 and can be removed or repositioned as required. For business shuttles you can even have six seats facing each other in a so-called ‘conference’ arrangement.
Taking electric know-how from the ‘big’ e-Transit and US-market F150 Lightning pick-up, the e-Tourneo pairs a big, 74kWh battery with a 218 horsepower motor and features onboard sockets for powering appliances, chargers or other equipment out in the field. For commercial users it can also be bought and run through the Ford Pro support network of sales, finance, servicing and support.
VW fans disappointed by the ID.Buzz’s lack of space can take heart in the fact the next-generation Transporter will in fact be built alongside the new Transit Custom and share the same basic platform. Which is good news for the huge fanbase of lifestyle Transporter buyers perhaps eager to make the switch to electrification for their next vehicle.
We’ll have to wait for more on the VW version, Ford in the meantime confirming there will also be plug-in hybrid and traditional diesel options for this next-generation Tourneo, the latter available with a new eight-speed automatic and option of all-wheel drive. Tough looking Active versions will be part of the range alongside Sport and flagship Titanium X models as well. Sales for all Tourneo models start in mid-2023, with pricing and other details expected in due course.
