Pick-up trucks moved beyond their traditional role as workhorses decades ago. Today, they double as versatile personal vehicles, combining SUV interiors with go-anywhere durability. And while vans might be more often seen as the more typical working vehicle, pick-ups bridge the gap between cars and commercial vehicles very well. Be aware that taxation rules have changed - you can read more about that in this and other articles - but you can still get them on lease deals.
Why Lease A Pick-Up Truck?
Leasing makes driving a brand-new vehicle simple - you pay fixed monthly payments and hand the vehicle back at the end of the 2-5-year contract. Just be aware that the taxation of pick-up trucks has changed, the next two questions contain a brief explanation how those changes will affect their personal and business use.
What Tax Changes Affect Pick-Up Trucks?
Starting from 6th April 2025, a double cab pick-up truck that can carry at least one tonne of payload in its load space is no longer classified as a van for BIK or capital allowance. The vehicles are classified as passenger cars. If you want all the details, read our in-depth article about the tax changes affecting pick-up trucks.
Do These Tax Changes Impact All Pick-Up Trucks?
None of these new tax rules initially affected single or extended cab pick-up trucks because HMRC deemed them as “clearly made for commercial use only”. They therefore were set to remain classified as commercial vehicles for tax purposes. However, the Government issued a definition clarification saying that the tax treatment of what it refers to as 'double cab pick-ups' will also include models often referred to as extended, extra, king and super cab pick-ups from the 6th April 2025.
The explanation from the Government is that “there is nothing about these vehicles that renders them unsuitable for private use”, and therefore means they will be treated as personal vehicles and taxed accordingly. So, you can still lease them, but won’t always get the preferential business rates, and with that said let’s take a look at three of the best available right now.

Ford Ranger
The latest Ford Ranger improves on nearly every aspect of the previous version in meaningful ways. It looks better, drives better, is far more spacious on the inside, it’s also available with a V6 3.0-litre engine! Every version of the Ranger carries over 1000kg in the back, meaning it can be used as a work vehicle without breaking a sweat. If you ask us, the Ranger shows that Ford understands pick-up trucks vehicles are often used as personal vehicles too, the comfort levels alone demonstrate that!

Toyota Hilux
The Toyota Hilux is a modern twist on old-school pick-up truck design - instead of suspension coils on the back wheels it uses leaf springs. That suspension choice means less complex things to break at the back end. It packs a 2.8-litre engine under the bonnet and a fantastic 10-year warranty covers the whole vehicle. Picking a Hilux is often seen as making the choice to drive a vehicle that offers durability and workhorse practicality over anything else, we like that!

Volkswagen Amarok
The new Volkswagen Amarok has a slightly nicer interior than the Ford Ranger (subjective, we know), but platform sharing vehicles often outdo each other in certain areas. You also need to be careful which trim/spec level you choose in the Amarok because there are a few versions that pull the payload below 1000kg. The Amarok can be fitted with the same big V6 3.0-litre engine as the Ranger, which really does have to be driven to see how powerful it is.
