Introducing contact-free home services
Research and shop for your next vehicle from the comfort of your home with home delivery and live video viewing services.
Home delivery
Vehicles advertised with ‘Home delivery’ mean you can get it delivered to your address - no need to leave the house!
By adding your postcode, you’ll be able to see instantly if the dealership offers delivery to your area. Note that some dealerships may offer this service for free, others may charge an additional fee.
Live video viewing
You’re now able to book a video viewing and vehicle walk-around to replace a forecourt visit.
Adverts with ‘Live video viewing’ enable you to book a time with the seller to get a live video walkaround of the vehicle. You’ll be able to ask questions and go in for a closer look - just like you would in person!
Visiting a dealership forecourt
To help you shop responsibly dealerships have introduced a range of COVID-19 safety measures which they’re highlighting on their adverts following the latest government advice.
This may include but isn’t limited to:
click and collect services
operating by appointment only
the use of PPE
Check the advert for more details or contact the seller to find out more.
Your questions answered
Government guidance has clarified you can currently buy a car and arrange home delivery or outdoor customer collection in England. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are following guidance from their devolved governments, so always check the latest government guidance for what is possible.
Many people are considering a car as an alternative to public transport, and Auto Trader has got more stock on site than ever – including new and used cars and a huge choice of makes and models from throughout the years.
You may be able to arrange a test drive directly with the dealership. Some may offer solo test drives on trade plates, if their insurer provides it. Others may join a test drive in the rear left seat furthest from the driver.
We recommend always checking the latest government guidance to see what’s safe and possible to do so everyone can shop responsibly.
Currently, Government guidance on car home delivery and customer collection applies to England, with Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland following guidance from their devolved governments.
Our home services and COVID-19 safety measures ad features are now available across Auto Trader adverts for cars, bikes, vans and caravans and motorhomes.
Find cars for sale near you by entering your postcode in Auto Trader’s search box. Where home delivery is available as an option, you should see our new ‘home delivery’ icon on the advert. The retailer will also add into the ‘COVID-19 safety measures’ space within the advert whether they offer car collection services.
Always double check with the dealership using our online contact details, as they may be able to help you further.
Retailers are encouraged to follow best practice guidelines including the sanitisation of vehicles. You can learn more about the steps retailers are taking in the ‘COVID-19 safety measures’ feature on Auto Trader adverts.
We encourage everyone to buy and sell responsibly. Always follow NHS guidelines on social distancing and hygiene if you have to leave the house.
If you go ahead with the purchase, you can also clean and disinfect the car yourself (here’s our guide to get you started).
Car dealerships across the UK can now provisionally open, provided they have the right measures in place. However, the situation is constantly changing and on 30th June, the UK’s first local lockdown was imposed in Leicester and non-essential businesses there were required to close again. Other regions may have to follow suit, so we encourage you to always check the latest advice in your local region and assess the car buying options available to you.
There is no explicit ban or Government guidance on privately selling or buying cars at this time. We encourage you to consult available advice on the NHS site and gov.uk at all times and only sell a car if you feel safe to do so.
