Thank you Volvo for listening to consumers; not everyone wants an SUV

Back in August last year Volvo broke the news it would no longer be selling estate or saloon cars in the UK. The decision was made as these body types contributed to less than 10 per cent of Volvo’s sales, while its ever-popular SUV models dominated here. Yet less than a year on, Volvo has changed its mind – well partly. There’s no word on the return of the S60 saloon, however Volvo estates are coming back!
For many fans of Volvo their enthusiasm for its estates never left. Volvo says its decision to reintroduce the models follows an outcry from heart-broken customers for whom the brand is synonymous with boxy load-luggers. Posting on LinkedIn, Nicole Melillo Shaw, Managing Director at Volvo Car UK confirmed the V60 and V90 will be available to order from next month, adding “I’ve very much enjoyed hearing so many stories from our consumers about their fond memories of our estate cars over the past half-century. I look forward to many more!“ It’s refreshing to hear Volvo has listened to feedback and is filled with as much nostalgia for its estates as its customers. We can only hope buyers put their money where their mouth is at the point of purchase. The slightly lower price of the V60 and V90 compared to the equivalent XC60 or XC90 should certainly add to the appeal. The estate models are arguably better value for money than the SUVs given they offer a similar amount of practicality. Here at Auto Trader, we love how estate cars still offer acres of space, but with better handling than SUVs. They also have much lower tailgates, so your dog doesn’t have to be an agility champion to jump into the boot and loading heavy items is easier. While there’s no denying Volvo’s SUVs are great cars, let’s hope absence has only made the heart grow fonder, and both the V60 and V90 will prove more popular the second time around.
