This year’s Paris Motor Show has been particularly busy for French car brands as Peugeot, Citroën, Alpine and Renault all pull out the stops on their home turf. We’ve just driven the all-electric Renault 5 and now hot on its heels Renault has used Paris as the backdrop to reveal the Renault 4 E-Tech 100% electric. This follows the same recipe as its smaller sibling, taking heavy inspiration from the original Renault 4 and combining it with the latest technology to create a very modern electric reincarnation.
• The Renault 4 is best described as a small crossover, more spacious than the Renault 5 and sitting higher up than the Captur • The design includes an illuminated front grille reminiscent of the original 4, an electrically operated opening canvas roof and comes with vehicle-to-load (V2L) - basically a socket from which you can run anything from hedge trimmers to a charger for your electric bike • It will provide up to 250 miles of range • Expected to arrive mid-2025 • Pricing scheduled to be announced next year

Design and models available
The Renault 4 E-Tech includes many nods to the original, but like the new Renault 5, it has been entirely reimagined as an electric car for the modern age. The shape of the car remains rectangular like its predecessor but is now less rounded at the corners, making it appear more contemporary and rugged. At the front, the grille is a single piece with an illuminated surround and the Renault logo in the middle. Down the side the rearmost window evokes the shape of the original and at the back, the rear lights, formally three rounded bulbs, are now lines of LEDs clustered into three distinct segments. A large canvas roof is a standout feature and unlike the original this is now electrically powered and can be opened using a voice command. The Renault 4 will be available in seven different colours including ‘Hauts-de-France Green’ and ode to the 1960s colour ‘Île-de-France’ Blue and there will also be two-tone options on offer.

Interior and tech
Inside, there is a focus space, technology, and sustainability. On the two highest levels of trim 100 per cent of the internal materials come from recycled fibres and Renault says 88.6 per cent of the total car will be recyclable once it gets to the end of its life. The Renault 4 is longer than the Renault 5 and has slightly more interior space. In line with the newest Renault models, it has Google built into its infotainment system. There are two large screens – one of which is directly in front of the driver, the other is a 10-inch multimedia screen. In addition, the ‘Reno’ assistant is built-in which can help by scheduling charges and answering other questions.

Batteries/range or engines
Like the Renault 5, the 4 will be offered with two battery options. The smaller of the two should be good for around 186 miles of range, while the larger 52kWh battery provide more power and up to 250 miles according to the official WLTP figures. Each will come with a heat pump to maximise range in colder temperatures, vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability allowing you to charge other electrical devices and vehicle to grid functionality which can feed energy from the battery back into the grid.

Price and release
We expect the Renault 4 to arrive in the UK by mid-2025. Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but we will hear more next year, and if you are keen to get ahead of the curve, £150 will get you access to the ‘R-Pass’ allowing you to order yours 10 days before everyone else.

What other cars from Renault are due this year?
The recent launch of the all-electric Renault 5 has been a big deal for Renault. It has been grabbing headlines for its nostalgic looks and its affordable price tag, but it is not the only new model launched from the brand this year. Additionally, Renault has also launched the Symbioz, a new mid-size hybrid crossover and it has also refreshed the smaller Captur and given us a new Rafale flagship .

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?
Renault isn’t the only manufacturer reinventing its back catalogue and buyers looking for a retro-modern electric car might also consider the new Mini Aceman or the Fiat 600e.
