The Citroën C4 has always straddled the space between hatchback, coupe, and SUV, taking elements of all body types and rolling them into one 'uniquely Citroën' package. The C4 X then blurs the line further by stretching the C4 out, creating a bigger boot and a saloon-like shape. Citroën had a strong presence at this year's Paris Motor Show, using it as an opportunity to reveal a mid-life facelift for both models. While the changes aren't large, the C4 and C4 X both gain a new look at the front and electric variants will come with vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, enabling you to charge other devices from the car.
• The C4 and C4 X crossovers sit between the smaller C3 and the larger C5 X • Both models get a new exterior look, Advanced Comfort seats, a new infotainment system and an array of safety features. Electric versions will now get vehicle-to-load capability • Electric versions have a range of up to 260 miles • Expected to be available early 2025 • Prices are yet to be confirmed

Design and models available
To keep the C4 and C4 X in line with the newly updated C3 they will both gain the new Citroën logo, an updated grille and new LED headlight clusters in a simplified thinner shape. At the back, blink and you might miss the changes, but again the light clusters have been tweaked to give a smoother more coherent look. You can choose from two new paint colours – ‘Manhattan Green’ and ‘Eclipse Blue’ – and other styling changes include a new wheel design and customisable ‘Colour Clips’ on the rear doors.

Interior and tech
Inside there’s a new dashboard and two trim levels – PLUS and MAX – will get a new seven-inch digital driver display and a 10-inch touchscreen featuring the latest infotainment system, which Citroën promises will be intuitive to use with customisable widgets and the help of a ‘Hello Citroën’ voice assistant. As with the current models, a colour head-up display shows important information directly in the driver’s eye line. Citroën is well-known for its focus on comfort and says it has combined its Advanced Comfort suspension with improved Advanced Comfort seats featuring a thicker level of foam. The C4 and C4 X will come with up to 20 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) including emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance with the ability to steer the car. Blind spot monitoring, and traffic sign recognition are also available. Electric models will now have vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability allowing you to charge up other electrical devices – like laptops or e-bikes – from the car when you are out and about.

Batteries and engines
Citroën, like Vauxhall, remains focused on catering for all needs. Rather than moving straight to fully electric models, it is bridging the gap by providing hybrid engines as a stepping stone between petrol and electric. The C4 will be offered with two mild hybrid engine options with either 100 or 136 horsepower, while the C4 X is only available with the more powerful variant. There’s also a choice of two battery sizes for the electric e-C4 and e-C4 X models. The smaller battery has an official WLTP range of up to 223 miles, and a bigger 54kWh battery provides a 260-mile range.

Price and release
Citroën hasn’t yet shared its prices for the C4 and C4 X, but both the current models start at just under £20,000 and you’ll need around £30,000 for an electric version. We expect the new models to have a slightly increased asking price, but to be in the same ballpark.
What other cars from Citroën are due this year?
Citroën has been busy and had a lot of new and updated models on display at the Paris Motor Show. In addition to the C4 and C4 X, it launched a concept C5 Aircross SUV and a facelifted Ami quadricycle .

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?
The C4 and C4 X share their foundations with other cars from the Stellantis group, so the closest competitors are the Peugeot 2008 and Vauxhall Mokka. While nothing quite spans the breath of body types like the Citroëns, ë-C4 rivals include the Hyundai Kona Electric and Renault Mégane E-Tech and those considering a hybrid might look at the Renault Arkana or Toyota C-HR.
