"The narrative for electric cars has too long focused on huge power outputs, supercar trouncing acceleration times and ludicrous stat-driven bragging rights. Which makes this new wave of affordable, attractive and more relevant electric cars like this Hyundai Inster such a breath of fresh air. Comfortably hitting the sub-£25,000 entry price point also targeted by the likes of the Renault 5, Citroën ë-C3 and VW ID.2all the Inster is more expensive than a Dacia Spring or Leapmotor T03 but is more generously equipped and proves affordable doesn’t have to look cheap."

Running costs for a Hyundai INSTER

The Inster certainly packs a lot into a small car, one of the virtues of its size being it doesn’t need a massive battery to nail that psychologically important 200-mile usable range. That keeps the purchase or monthly finance costs keen but also helps with things like charging, a smaller battery meaning shorter and cheaper stops if you don’t have a driveway and have to live off the public network. For those lucky enough to have the option of charging at home it’ll cost pennies to top up every night if you’re smart with your energy tariff, making it a perfect second car for a busy household or ideal first car for young drivers taking their first steps onto the roads.

Hyundai builds a lot of electric cars and the tech it shares with Kia is well-proven, so although the Inster is a new vehicle it benefits from that existing expertise. The five-year warranty is another confidence-inspiring feature, and should mean you’re fully covered for the duration of any typical finance term.

Safety for a Hyundai INSTER

The cost of adding now obligatory safety aids is one of the things making small cars so difficult for manufacturers to make money on, so it’s good to see the likes of Hyundai sticking with them. And the Inster comes fully loaded with an entire alphabet of acronyms signifying the many and various systems there to keep you safe. That includes sophisticated automatic emergency braking that works at junctions and can detect cars, motorcycles, bikes and pedestrians, various systems to keep you in lane, blind spot warnings and more. We only found out once we’d finished our drive but apparently the mute button silences the irritating speed limit warnings as well, which is a bonus!

How comfortable is the Hyundai INSTER

Hyundai somewhat optimistically calls the Inster a ‘small SUV’. It ain’t kidding on the small bit, the compact cabin only offering seating for four and on the cosy side even then. It may look bigger than an i10 on the outside but it doesn’t feel it from within, put it this way. It still charms, especially with the pale trim and houndstooth upholstery, the front seats combining into a kind of bench arrangement while the rears on our higher-spec test car could slide back and forth to balance boot space against legroom, releasing a surprising amount of space when you have them in their rearmost position even if that comes at the cost of boot space. Again on this top spec car the seats fold flat to create a big space in the back or, with all four flattened, space to lie down and sleep! The quality feels decent, though, and refinement is also impressive for such a small car. The ride quality is a bit bouncy and the light steering demands a fair bit of arm twirling but for the kind of shorter, urban journeys the Inster is built for it’s all fine.

Hyundai keeps it easy here, with just two trim levels, both of which are well-equipped for something that presents as a budget car. Indeed, while it costs more than the equivalently titchy Leapmotor T03 we were driving recently it feels in a different league of quality and tech, the paired 10.25-inch screens for instruments and infotainment powered by the same slick operating system seen on other Hyundais and including stuff like built-in nav even on the cheaper trim level. Or the option to run your phone apps through CarPlay or Android Auto if you prefer. Our higher spec car got all the goodies, including heated seats and steering wheel, ambient lighting, privacy glass, a wireless phone charging pad and more. We were less thrilled by the fact that any colours other than white – nice as the options are with their trendy, earthy tones – cost extra.

Power for a Hyundai INSTER

There are two battery options for the lower trim level, the upper one just getting the larger, Long-Range version. On paper there doesn’t seem a huge difference in size but the bigger battery slices over a second off the benchmark 0-62mph time and increases the best-case range to just shy of 230 miles, which we would actually have achieved on our test drive at the efficiency we were recording. This in mid-October on fast country roads not usually suited to maximising range in an electric car as well. In the speed range that matters the Inster picks up smoothly enough and has enough to keep pace with the traffic, and we’d have no issues taking it onto motorways or other ‘big’ roads. We’re also fans of Hyundai’s regenerative braking system, which uses paddles behind the steering wheel to alter how much energy you put back into the battery when slowing down. The auto setting is particularly clever, matching the car’s speed to whatever is in front and even bringing you to a complete halt without needing to use the conventional brakes at all in stop-start traffic. Which would be one explanation for that stellar efficiency rating we got.
