Compact caravans are great for those who’ve never towed before because they are easier to handle on the road and manoeuvre once you’re on the campsite. There’s also something magical about owning your own tiny home. Still with us? Let’s go.
1. Xplore
These sporty caravans come with a thoroughbred pedigree hailing from the Erwin Hymer Group stable but with prices starting from just £21,999 you won’t need to rein in your spending too much.
Three models make up the range – the four-berth XC Lite, two-berth XC Duo and four-berth XC Quad and the whole line-up has been rebranded for 2024 making them a really attractive option for those who want a caravan that doesn't require a massive tow car to pull it. Having said that, we can help if it’s time to upgrade your tug. All models have pretty much the same kit specification including twin bike racks, alarm, tracker (for the caravan not your kids), Whale heating and best of all? Mobile internet and WiFi. Yes, that’s right, you’re towing your own internet cafe. Because after all, if it’s not on the ‘gram, did it even happen IRL? For a quick layout run-down, we’ve got: the XC Lite with a lounge that can make up as a double bed plus rear dinette which transforms into single bed with a further bunk above; the perfect choice for couples, the XC Duo with large front lounge and spacious washroom; and the XC Quad with fixed bed and space for one or two to sleep in the lounge. 2. Basecamp
Basecamp was one of the first mainstream compact caravans to launch in the UK back in 2016 and it’s remained popular. As the name suggests, it really is well-suited to those who prefer a base rather than luxury accommodation. Bikes and muddy boots are indeed welcome. Ornaments and trinkets, less so.
It’s manufactured by Swift who refer to it as a ‘crossover camping vehicle’ so if you aren’t too keen on being called a caravanner just yet, then here’s the solution. Prices start at £24,995 and there’s three models in the range – Basecamp 2 sleeps two, Basecamp 3 sleeps three and, guess what? Basecamp 4 sleeps four. Innovation is a key feature of the Basecamp and across the line-up, there’s solar panels, space-saving beds, anchor points for securing your bikes, foldaway seating, removable storage baskets and plenty of kit including fridge freezer, oven and grill and hob. The Swift Command control system allows you to connect to your caravan while you’re away from it, so you can turn on the heating before you get back from your hike, or locate it should you be too drunk to find it or if it goes MIA through no fault of your own.

3. Go-Pod
If you are not well versed in the art of pleasant campsite conversation, don’t buy one of these. These beauties are proper little attention seekers and rightly so – other campers will coo over them. We guarantee it.
Don’t be fooled by the diminutive dimensions however, once the pop top roof is in use, there’s more room than you’d find in a traditional teardrop caravan. Go-Pods are made for two to sleep in comfort or one to sleep in utter luxury. The one-piece GRP fibreglass shell prevents water ingress and keeps the caravan light (it’s got an MTPLM of just 750kg) and easy to tow. This year, Go-Pod has introduced a more premium model called Pioneer – this also sleeps two but there are even more ways to make it your own with an additional three furniture finishes to choose from and more than 60 options for upholstery. If you struggle making decisions, you’ve a lot to ponder. Prices start at £15,995 for the Go-Pod Classic and £16,995 for the Go-Pod Pioneer.

4. Bailey Discovery
Bailey is well-regarded for producing traditional caravans and motorhomes and has been doing so for decades and its Discovery range is a distinctive departure from tradition. These caravans are a great choice for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking with the option of adding a Thule bike carrier to the front A-frame. And prices start at under £20,000 which represents great value.
There’s three layouts to choose from – the smallest is the two-berth twin-bed D4-2 while the D4-4L sleeps four people with two twin beds and the option for two bunks above the dinette area. The D4-4 also caters for four and has a fixed bed in the rear and twin-beds at the front. All models in the range are lightweight so it is unlikely you’ll need to invest in a big tow car but we won’t judge if you’re thinking that a Land Rover Discovery towing a Bailey Discovery would be a sweet set-up. With distinctive graphics and fresh, simple look, these caravans would suit those who are new to the hobby and want something sporty looking that’s easy to tow while offering superior comfort.

5. Touring 630
The coolest of the cool caravans is the three-berth Touring 630 from German manufacturer Eriba. You’ll need in excess of £33,000 to own one of these icons but they hold their value well and give proper retro vibes. It’s the most luxurious model in the Touring line-up and deserving of a special mention.
You can pretty much create the caravan of your dreams with options to customise both the outside and inside. Big white box? Not necessarily. You could have one in Tango Red, Harbour Blue or Nugget Gold for an extra £3,000 or so. We remember when caravan curtains and seating were browns of every hue and now look how far we’ve come – there’s a kaleidoscope of upholstery options in an Eriba. The fixed bed is comfy and the dinette area makes a further single bed but upgrade to a pop top roof if you’d like an extra double. Mod cons are definitely part of the package with powerful Truma heating and a massive fridge. We know the Touring 630 isn’t in everyone’s budget but we can dream – and we should.
