Taking the whole family away requires a degree in logistics – or so it seems – but if you find the perfect six-berth caravan, joyful, fuss-free holidays are yours for the taking.
Of course, on a simple level, you’re looking for space for six people to sleep but the caravans we’ve chosen offer more than just a bed for the night, they offer flexible layouts that will make parents, kids and even grandparents happy. You’ll find dedicated lounging areas, spacious washrooms and plenty of technology that makes being away that little bit more relaxing. It’s worth remembering that most six-berth caravans are on twin-axles so we’d always recommend doing a towing course so you feel ready to take on new adventures.

1. Buccaneer Aruba
With a price tag from £46,999, you would expect luxury and that’s what you get with the 8ft wide Buccaneer Aruba manufactured by the Erwin Hymer Group UK. It’s the Rolls-Royce of six-berth caravans. But where does everyone sleep? Firstly, there’s a fixed double at the back next to the washroom, a dinette in the centre makes a double, and then there’s space for a further two people in the lounge. The room dividers can be used to create separate areas – something that comes in handy if grown-ups want to stay up late while little ones are asleep. Or perhaps teenagers staying up late and parents wanting some peace. Either way, plenty of options.
The central and water heating system from Alde runs on gas or electric and can be programmed just as you would do at home. Even better, there’s underfloor heating. It’s touchscreen-operated making it a doddle to use and most importantly, it’s one of the best systems on the market so you’ll never be cold. We know eating out can be costly, especially with a big family and that’s why you’d rather cook on gas than a campfire – here you’ve got an oven, three gas burners, one hotplate and a microwave. The washroom is plenty big enough with a water-saving shower head so there’s much less chance of the water running out while you’re having a wash. 2. Avante 868

The Avante 868 is another smashing family model from the Erwin Hymer Group but costs significantly less than the Aruba. Prices start at £32,499 and this layout is always popular with families because it has bunks. And what kid doesn’t love a bunk bed? What makes this model a great option for families with really young children is that the bunks are next to the double bed ensuring a better night’s sleep for everyone. The front lounge transforms easily into a bed for a further two people providing even more flexibility.
Everyone (of a certain age) appreciates clever storage and there’s tonnes of it in this caravan – above your head, under the beds, in cupboards and in the large lockers. On days when it’s just too grotty to step outside, hang out in the lounge where it’s bright and maybe watch a film. In the old days, families loved to be together, after all… The heating is easy to use and operated via a touchscreen system and with Grade III Thermal Insulation, you’ll be a lot warmer than you were in the caravans you might have experienced as a child. 3. Phoenix GT75 762
Bailey’s Phoenix GT75 762 starts at £28,249 making it the keenest priced six-berth caravan we’ve chosen. It doesn’t have a fixed double but has one of the most flexible layouts in its class – parallel bunks, two further bunks available in the dinette area, and twin singles or a double in the lounge.
If you’re looking at buying your first family caravan, you can’t go wrong with this model – Bailey caravans are well-made and put to the test in extreme conditions. The manufacturer has towed them through the Australian Outback and through the Arctic to show just how weather-proof and resilient they are. This caravan is 7ft 3in wide so you’ll never feel cramped. Space has been well-utilised and not having a fixed bed has provided more room for the washroom at the rear of the caravan. In terms of the interior, furnishings and fittings are simple with a big focus on storage because if you’ve got kids, travelling light just isn’t an option. There are shelves and lockers and a nook by the door has space for shoes, coats and umbrellas. The kitchen is in the centre of the caravan with sink, oven, hob and grill and worktop on one side and opposite, more workspace and a fridge. A clever feature is the hob cover doubling up as an extra work surface. A SONOS speaker and wireless phone charger are part of the package and you can opt for Wi-Fi from your dealer if you’re buying the model new. 4. Adora 623 DT Sava

Manufactured by Slovenian company Adria, this caravan would be best suited to those with younger children as there’s the option for four bunks – the double is created in the lounge where the U-shaped seating area is.
Prices start at around £35,655 so it’s one of the more expensive of the six-berths we’ve found but for that you will find it to feel very homely and comfortable. As with the Phoenix, not having a fixed double makes for a bigger washroom. Adora is Adria’s best-selling range and you’ll often find some good deals on used models here on the site. For example, we recently spotted a 2019 Sava for under £20,000. There’s been a lot of thought put into the lighting – it is dimmable so it’s possible to put the children to bed in the back of the caravan and enjoy some time in the lounge without disturbing light sleepers. A massive sunroof lets in plenty of light and opens so you can let the air in during the day. You could even look for shooting stars at night if you can keep your eyes open after a day with the kids. 5. Swift Sprite Quattro MB Exclusive

Swift Exclusive is a new range of caravans based on the Sprite range and was launched for the company’s 75th-anniversary. This six-berth has a fixed bed, bunks and the option for a double in the front lounge. It costs £30,345 new but for that, you’re getting a great package – a comfortable lounge with wraparound seating, separate shower and toilet, dinette area and a fixed bed. The latter has a Duvalay mattress for maximum comfort and a proper headboard – there’s lockers above the bed and shelves for all those books you’ve been wanting to read but never get round to.
The manufacturer has considered the needs of a busy family with plenty of spots to charge devices including a wireless charging point in the lounge and twin USB points. Not only that but it’s also 4G Wi-Fi-ready via a 12V power supply in the kitchen locker. If you’d like to watch TV in the lounge, there’s a dedicated place for it so everyone has a clear view and there’s further space for a TV in the main bedroom area. This layout would definitely suit a family with children of varying ages and of course, those who can’t be separated from their gadgets. If a motorhome is more your speed, then the Elddis Majestic is a dealer special available only at Marquis and is a coach built motorhome built on a Peugeot chassis. It has six traveling seats and six berths to keep everyone both safe and comfortable. It’s got a 165ps engine with 6 speed gearbox and is a smooth drive. Once you’ve found your perfect pitch and it’s time to bed down for the night, there’s plenty of options. There’s no question that the electric drop down bed over the lounge will be the most popular place! You can also make the rear lounge sofas into a double and do the same in the front lounge. This model has a solar panel so the truly adventurous can head off grid and still be self-sufficient. It’s also Grade 3 fully insulated and stays warm with the CompleteHeat system from Whale.
