With its combination of manageable size, attractive modern-retro looks and that brilliantly charismatic triple at its heart the Triumph Trident 660 makes a great first big bike for new riders, be that with the full 81 horsepower or detuned to A2 licence trim for younger riders just through their test. And with a new range of tech updates and fresh colours for the 2025 model year Triumph is making sure it keeps pace with fresher rivals like the Honda CB750 Hornet and ever-popular Yamaha MT-07.

To that end Triumph has uprated the Trident’s suspension with Big Piston versions of the existing Showa SFF upside-down forks, added an additional Sport rider mode and included a quickshifter and cruise control in the standard spec. In a further reassurance for new riders taking their first steps onto a more serious bike the traction control and ABS are now more sophisticated ‘cornering’ style systems controlled by a six-axis IMU.

While still less powerful than the Hornet and more expensive than both that and the MT-07, this upgraded specification helps the Triumph’s case, the Trident already proving the more characterful option when we rode it back to back with the Honda. Saying that the Triumph’s strongest competition perhaps comes with another of the Japanese brand’s products in the shape of the CB650R. With its four-cylinder engine and option of Honda’s E-Clutch automated shifting this is the nearest to the Trident in looks and character, Triumph hoping this latest round of updates will be enough to convince buyers its way.
Pricing for the 2025 Trident 660 starts at £7,895 and bikes will be in dealers before the end of the year, with potential deals available on any existing stock of the previous model if you’re in the market for a bargain.
