A fancy new engine can’t do much good without a bike to put it in and, sure as night follows day, news of Ducati’s next-gen V-twin has been swiftly followed by confirmation of the new Panigale and Streetfighter that will use it.
While the new 120 horsepower 890cc motor is down on power compared with their predecessors using the 155 horsepower Superquadro twin the all-new Panigale V2 and Streetfighter V2 claim equivalent performance through Ducati’s ‘Fight Formula’ weight saving philosophy and a monocoque aluminium frame weighing just 4kg in isolation. This contributes to a weight (before fuel) of just 175kg for the Panigale V2 S with its lighter lithium battery, a 15kg saving over the existing bike combined with the latest in rider assistance tech and a more comfortable riding position to make it just as fast point-to-point by Ducati’s claims.

It also sets up a tantalising comparison with Yamaha’s new R9, its creamy CP3 triple offering a different character but equivalent power while the Streetfighter takes on sporty nakeds like the Triumph Street Triple 765 RS. All of which is good news for those looking for more road relevant and usable performance than that offered by the latest crop of 200-plus horsepower superbikes and hypernakeds.
With styling inspired by the new Panigale V4 – and the adoption of a similar twin-sided swingarm – the new V2 has a distinctive look of its own, underseat exhausts and a pared-back design harking back to classics from the archive like the much loved 748. Full LED headlights, Brembo B50 brakes, a new configurable 5.0-inch TFT screen and latest six-axis IMU controlling Ducati branded Traction, Wheelie and Engine Brake Control via four rider modes also feature. Ducati’s Quick Shift 2.0 is standard as well.

Two versions will be available, the standard Panigale V2 with a conventional lead-acid battery, a fully adjustable Showa fork/Sachs shock combo, twin seat set-up and 179kg kerbweight. The V2 S adds Öhlins suspension, the lighter battery, a single-seat arrangement and Power Launch and Pit Limiter modes. A track-only exhaust system is an option on both as well, and raises peak power to 126 horsepower while saving another 4.5kg into the bargain.

It's much the same for the new Streetfighter V2, albeit with detail differences like a 30mm longer swingarm arrangement that, along with the more upright riding position, will make for slightly less frenzied riding style. Interestingly both bikes will also be available in detuned 47 horsepower form, opening Ducati sports bike ownership up to (well-heeled) younger riders still on a restricted A2 licence.
Pricing is yet to be confirmed, Ducati saying the Panigale V2 models will be in dealers from January with the Streetfighters on sale from March and both bikes available in any colour you want, so long as it’s red.
