What is the Ultra Low Emission Zone?

London's Ultra Low Emission Zone is an area in central London where the most polluting vehicles have to pay a daily charge to drive.
Motorcycles including mopeds, motorised tricycles and quads need to need to meet Euro 3 emissions standards to travel within the ULEZ. If your bike is not Euro 3 standard (or above), you have to pay a charge. Read on to learn more about where the zone is, when it operates and how you may be able to get financial support if your motorbike doesn’t meet ULEZ emissions standards.

Where is the Ultra Low Emission Zone?

From 29th August 2023, all 32 Boroughs across London being included in the ULEZ, meaning any non-compliant vehicle driving in and out of these London boroughs will be charged £12.50 daily. You can read more about the ULEZ expansion here

When does the ULEZ zone operate?

At present ULEZ operates every day of the year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with the exception of Christmas Day (25th December).

How do I know if my bike meets ULEZ emissions standards?

The good news is, most motorcycles produced after 2007 meet ULEZ standards. With that being said, ULEZ is enforced based on the bike's emissions, not its age. All vehicles must adhere to Euro 3 NOx emissions regulations.
You can check if your bike meets ULEZ standards by using Transport for London’s vehicle checking tool here.

What will happen if my bike doesn’t meet ULEZ emissions standards?

If your bike doesn't comply with the ULEZ emission requirements (or isn't exempt) you must pay £12.50 per day to drive inside the zone.

Can I get help if my bike doesn’t meet ULEZ emission standards?

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, introduced a new scrappage scheme worth £110 million to help eligible Londoners retrofit or scrap their polluting motorcycles that are not up to ULEZ standards. This will come in the form of a grant payment of up to £1000.
To be eligible for the ULEZ motorcycle scrappage scheme, you must live within one of the 32 London boroughs or the City of London and be in receipt of certain benefits. You can read more about the grants and find out if you are eligible on the Transport for London website here.
