Kia has revealed more details about the new EV5 SUV, an electric equivalent of the popular Sportage. The bold EV5 mirrors the design of the huge electric EV9 SUV and two newest electric cars in Kia’s range: the EV3 and EV4. The EV6 crossover, which has been on sale for a couple of years in standard and “hot” EV6 GT form, completes Kia’s electric line-up.
• The EV5 is a Sportage-sized contender launching into the competitive middleweight electric crossover market • Lots of onboard tech, a configurable interior made from recycled materials and more besides • With a range of up to 329 miles • All EV5s will have around 210 horsepower and front-wheel drive • Order books are open now with first customer deliveries due later in the year • Prices starting from £39,295

Design and models available

Kia has confirmed the EV5 will follow the same three trim levels as the rest of its electric range, starting with entry-level Air and progressing to GT-Line and GT-Line S. All variants will have the same battery pack and front wheel-drive for now with an all-wheel drive version and sporty ‘GT’ model likely to follow next year. Kia says it has optimised the EV5 for efficiency by considering the shape of the roof and by adding active air flaps in the front bumper. These can open and close to balance cooling efficiency with aerodynamics which should help you go further between charges.

Interior and tech

The EV5 is slightly longer, wider and taller than the Sportage which should make it more spacious inside, and it’s packed with storage solutions like an adjustable boot floor height and a large configurable centre console for stashing things like mobile phones and water bottles. The EV5 features Kia’s latest infotainment system displayed across two 12.3-inch screens and comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a voice assistant powered by ChatGPT. There’s also a 5.3-inch touch-screen exclusively for climate controls which is accompanied by a few physical switches. Range-topping models gain a head-up display. There’s a range of sustainable fabrics on offer, including bio-leather - a vegan option made with biodegradable materials - and a textile made of recycled PET plastic. The seats are worthy of mention, with various massage functions and a rear bench that goes fully flat to transform into a camping bed, as well as giving more usable space. You can also specify a camping table in the rear and fridge/warming compartment.

Batteries and range

The EV5 will be available with an 81.4kWh battery providing up to 329 miles of range and it will be able to rapid charge from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes. Like the EV6, the EV5 will have several modes of regenerative braking, plus an “i-pedal” that allows you to bring the car to a near-halt by easing off the throttle pedal. Kia also shares parent company Hyundai’s three-pin plug socket which allows drivers to charge appliances from the car, meaning the car’s battery becomes an energy storage facility for other gadgets. This tech is called “vehicle to load” (V2L) and is becoming more popular in electric cars as consumers look to maximise electricity usage at home at cheaper tariff times. It will be available higher-grade trim levels of the EV5.

Price and release

Prices start from £39,295 for the EV5 Air which is the only model to dodge the ’Expensive car Supplement’ which applies to all cars costing over £40,000. The GT-Line trim will cost £42,595, while the top of the range GT-Line S is priced at £47,095.

What other cars from Kia are due this year?

The compact EV3 won New Car of the Year at our 2025 Drivers’ Choice Awards, so we have high hopes for the new EV4 we’ll be driving shortly. Earlier this year Kia teased the EV2 Concept which will likely become a future rival for the Hyundai Inster.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

You can bet Kia’s parent company Hyundai will be offering its own spin on the shared technology under the EV5, while new brands from China like Zeekr X, Lynk & Co and others are also launching similar products into this already crowded market sector.
