2024 Mercedes GLS: Video Review

Rory climbs aboard the new £108,000 Mercedes GLS – is it a go anywhere, carry anything monster, or is it a bit too big for the UK?

2024’s Mercedes GLS is set to be one of the biggest SUVs in Europe, but is it too big for the average driver?
The new Mercedes GLS has undergone a significant design overhaul, with noticeable changes from its predecessor. The front grille now features four large horizontal bars for a more robust and imposing look, while gloss black accents surround the redesigned air intakes for a touch of sophistication. The front and rear lights have had a redesign, of course, with multibeam LED headlamps standard. The GLS’s side profile best showcases its massive dimensions (a hefty 5.2 metres in length – longer than a Range Rover), and the 23-inch wheels, which would look ridiculous on many cars, fit well in this SUV. Even the third row of seats offer a decent level comfort and legroom, and make the GLS a legitimate seven-seater. A removable tablet for controlling various in-car features, along with wireless noise-cancelling headphones for entertainment make it a great place for passengers. There’s also an impressive 470 litres of boot space which can be expanded to 890 litres by folding down the second and third-row seats. So, it’s a big car – but what’s it like to drive? Mercedes describes the GLS as the "S-Class of the SUV world," and has given it a driving experience to match. The air suspension, standard across all models, aims to provide a smooth and plush ride on uneven surfaces. And the GLS offers a unique "bounce mode" that aids in off-road situations – watch the video to see what that’s like in action. Is the Mercedes GLS too big for its boots?
