18 August 2008 Vijay Pattni rounds up the top ten supercars for sale on Auto Trader right now – including 007’s company car from upcoming James Bond flick Quantum of Solace… Aston Martin DBS
The drop-dead gorgeous Aston Martin DBS is one of the most lusted-after supercars in the world, and will feature in the upcoming 007 adventure Quantum of Solace, starring Daniel Craig. And this Aston is already a record-breaker – apart from its glorious 6-litre V12 powerplant, sculpted bodywork and razor-sharp handling, the DBS has made it into the record books. While filming for 2006’s Casino Royale, stunt driver Adam Kirtley rolled the DBS seven times for the film’s dramatic chase sequence, earning it a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Audi R8
The Audi R8 sports a 4.2-litre V8 engine producing 414bhp, which propels the baby road-rocket from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds before hitting its top speed of 187mph. Audi has already built a concept R8, featuring a V12 diesel engine churning out 500bhp and 737lb/ft of pulling power. And there are rumours of a new Audi R8 boasting a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V10 with 530bhp in the pipeline… Search for an Audi R8 on Auto Trader
Bugatti Veyron
But despite being beaten by the US-built Ultimate Aero SSC, the Veyron remains an astonishing feat of engineering. It sports a unique 8-litre engine configured in the shape of a W, with 16 cylinders and a massive EIGHT radiators cooling everything from the engine to the oil which moves the spoiler up and down. And this phenomenal engine produces 1,001bhp – meaning the Veyron can use its four-wheel-drive to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 2.5 seconds, before hitting its top speed of 253mph. And Bugatti has just announced a new version of the Veyron – the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, which is now the world’s fastest convertible… Search for a Bugatti Veyron on Auto Trader
Corvette Z06
And it’s a practical supercar too. It has a 634-litre boot – twice the size of a Volkswagen Golf – and is a comfortable cruiser. But nail the throttle and you’ll awaken the American-fury within – the colossal V8 delivers a sledgehammer assault to accelerate the ‘Vette from 0-62mph in under four seconds and on to a top speed of 198mph. This power and performance puts the Corvette Z06 into the same playing field as the £300,000 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren – but costs just £62,100. Search for a Corvette Z06 on Auto Trader
Ferrari F40
Enzo Ferrari – the father of the company – wanted to build a car which would crown the company and define it as the ultimate carmaker, and the F40 was the result. The Ferrari F40 features a twin-turbo 3-litre V8 engine producing 480bhp, can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 201mph. If you want one of the 1980’s ultimate dream machines you better be quick – Auto Trader has just ONE Ferrari F40 for sale. Search for a Ferrari F40 on Auto Trader
Honda NSX
Nestling underneath the super-sleek bodywork is a 3-litre V6 engine producing 290bhp. While this may not equal the near 500bhp muscle of the Corvette Z06 and Ferrari F40, the Honda NSX was a purist’s supercar – its engine was mounted in the middle for better handling and its chassis was designed by Formula One legend Ayrton Senna. The NSX accelerates from 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds and can hit a top speed of 165mph. Search for a Honda NSX on Auto Trader
Koenigsegg CCR
And in 2005, the Koenigsegg CCR was the world’s fastest production car for three months, topping out at 241mph, taking the crown from the British-built McLaren F1, which had held the record for 12 years. The Koenigsegg is one of the scariest supercars ever built – it doesn’t have any traction control, which terrified Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson. Search for a Koenigsegg on Auto Trader
Lamborghini Gallardo
The baby Lambo is powered by a 5-litre V10 engine mounted just behind the driver and passenger seat, which produces 510bhp. And the Gallardo makes full use of its small size and four-wheel-drive – courtesy of Lamborghini’s new bosses at Audi – to accelerate from 0-62mph in around four seconds before hitting a top speed of 197mph. Earlier this month we reported on a modified Lamborghini Gallardo built by American tuners Heffner, who strapped on two turbochargers to the Lambo’s V10, to produce a Bugatti Veyron-rivalling 930bhp. Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
The McLaren SLR features the fastest automatic transmission in the world, and houses a hand-built, 5.4-litre supercharged V8 engine producing 626bhp. This means the 0-62mph sprint is covered in around three seconds while the SLR tops out at 235mph. And Mercedes even claim the convertible SLR – which shares the coupe’s gullwing doors – can allow normal conversation at 120mph thanks to the car’s acoustics. Porsche 911 Turbo
However, Peugeot said it used the middle ‘0’ in its model range, and so Porsche renamed the sporting ‘Bug 911 instead. The rest, as they say, is history. The 911 has grown from strength to strength throughout its 40+ year history – and today’s 911 Turbo is an example of how big the Porker’s muscles have got. The 911 Turbo features a twin-turbochared 3.6-litre flat-six ‘Boxer’ style engine producing 470bhp and all-wheel-drive – similar to the Porsche Cayenne SUV. Porsche reckons the 911 Turbo will hit 62mph in 3.7 seconds, but some testers have recorded a time of 3.2 seconds. Search for a Porsche 911 on Auto Trader Check out the Corvette Z06 in action:
