Premiership 08/09: What the players should drive - News image

12 August 2008

Saturday sees the 2008/09 Premiership season kick off with the league’s clubs aiming to prevent Manchester United picking up a third consecutive title.

And Manchester United’s star player Cristiano Ronaldo is leading the car ownership standings as well with an Audi R8, Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe and Bentley Continental parked in his garage and a Bugatti Veyron on order.

So how can the league’s richest players outdo Ronaldo in the car park kudos stakes?  Adrian Hearn looks at what the stars such as Fernando Torres, Deco, Cesc Fabregas and Wayne Rooney should be driving.

SSC Ultimate Aero TT
It’s a myth that the £830,000 Bugatti Veyron is the world’s fastest car – its 253mph top speed was eclipsed by the American hypercar the SSC Ultimate Aero TT which managed 257mph. With a twin-turbocharged 6.2-litre engine, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT produces a colossal 1,187bhp – 181bhp more (or a Lotus Elise) than a Veyron.

There is currently only one Ultimate Aero TT in the UK and it was for sale on Auto Trader – for £399,990.

Bentley Zagato GTZ
The Bentley Continental has long been associated with the premiership footballer with Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane and Ronaldo all owning the brilliant British car.

But now Italian coachbuilder Zagato has got in partnership with Bentley to build the GTZ. Underneath the extravagant exterior is the 600bhp Bentley ‘Speed’ engine which will accelerate the car from 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 202mph. It’s  exclusive with just nine left-hand-drive models ever being made.

Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport
There have been a few limited edition Bugatti Veyrons such as the Pur Sang, Hermes and Sang Noir, but all of these million pound motors have only been modified cosmetically with special edition paint jobs and wheels. Now Bugatti has released details of its convertible model, the Grand Sport.

Various mechanical adjustments have been made to retain the car’s stability at high speeds while the removable roof will not be stored within the car – so you’ll need somewhere safe to secure it. However, with the roof down it will still hit 62mph in 2.5 seconds before topping out at 252mph – making it the world’s fastest convertible. On sale next summer, the £1 million+ hypercar will be the ideal purchase for the league’s winning club’s captain.

Lotus Evora
While the previous three are all bona fide supercars boasting top speeds in excess of 200mph, the Lotus Evora is a more affordable sports car which is sure to have breathtaking performance. Unveiled at last month’s British Motor Show, the Evora is the Hethel-based company’s first all-new car since the Elise in 1996 and is powered by a mid-mounted 3.5-litre Toyota-derived V6 engine developing 270bhp.

When it goes on sale next summer expect a top speed in excess of 150mph and stunning handling.

Maybach Exelero
A one-off customisation of the Maybach 57, the Exelero is one of the wildest ever cars. With 700bhp, the 2.66 ton Exelero will accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds and be good for 218mph.

It’s for sale at the moment in Austria, for the dazzling price of £3.9 million. With Chelsea captain John Terry believed to be on £130,000 a week, it would take him just 30 weeks to save up.

Lamborghini Reventon
The Reventon is ultimate Lamborghini – using the underpinnings of a 640bhp Murcielago and combining it with an awesome fighter-jet style design. On the road it will rocket from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds and run out of steam at 211mph. Just 20 will ever be built – at a cost of £800,000.

They’ve all be sold with one finding its home in England after being pre-ordered by an unnamed buyer in Birmingham. Time will tell if it’s a super-rich footballer who’s made the massive purchase.

Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series

The Mercedes McLaren SLR hypercar is the German car maker’s flagship model, but Arsenal captain William Gallas and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba have already got one of these. So it’s necessary for another elite player to get their hands on the amazing-looking Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series.

With 670bhp and 885lb/ft of pulling power, it’s more powerful than the SLR and with a price expected to be around £250,000 it’s £100,000 cheaper than the McMerc.

Kahn Cosworth Sport 300
Footballers love Range Rovers, and there are plenty of companies which will modify them with big wheels, customised paint jobs and ear-bleeding sound systems.

Yorkshire-based company Kahn Design has got together with legendary outfit Cosworth to create the Kahn Cosworth Sport 300, based on the diesel-powered Range Rover Sport. Sporting 22-inch alloy wheels, flared wheel arches and a massive front bodykit, the Kahn Cosworth costs £75,995.

Ferrari California
The California is the latest new Ferrari and will cost around £140,000 when it goes on sale. Powered by a 4.3-litre V8 engine, the 460bhp California  will accelerate from 0-62mph in less than four seconds and run on to a top speed of about 190mph.

Its folding roof will open or shut in 15 seconds and will go up against the likes of the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder and Aston Martin DB9 Volante in the convertible supercar market.

Fiat 500 Abarth 'Opening Edition'
Placing ‘professional footballer’ in the career path of an online insurance quote will guarantee a massive annual premium. And not all players are as fortunate as Gerrard, Ferdinand and Lampard with £100,000-a-week salaries.

So those just making a name for themselves like Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsay of Arsenal should have a look the re-born Fiat 500 Abarth. It’s got great looks, is well priced and still goes well with a top speed touching 130mph.
