13 August 2008

The 2008/09 Premiership football season kicks off this weekend with champions Manchester United the team to catch.

Premiership 08/09: What the players should drive

Paul Robinson
England goalkeeper Paul Robinson’s old Porsche Cayenne went up for sale the same time he signed for fellow ‘Auto Trader’ player Paul Ince at Blackburn Rovers. His 150mph Cayenne would accelerate from 0-62mph in just 7.2 seconds and came complete with a full service history, 12 months MOT and featured air-conditioning, leather seats and an on-board computer.

Jermaine Pennant
Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant’s old Audi A3 – which he shared with ex-girlfriend, Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe – was for sale in July. While not a rapid supercar or blinging off-roader, the humble Audi A3, with its 100bhp engine is a sound hatchback with good looks and solid German reliability.

Paul Ince
Former midfield hardman Paul Ince plied his trade at some of the world’s biggest clubs including Liverpool, Manchester United and Inter Milan before turning his hand to coaching. Making his debut as Premiership manager with Blackburn Rovers, Ince will face Everton away from home in his first game this weekend.

His old Mercedes CL600 was loaded with luxury, looked great and had a 500bhp V12 engine. Costing £100,000 new, the five-year-old car was a snip at £22,995.

Michael Owen
The Newcastle United striker made a name for himself in the late Nineties as a prodigious striker for Liverpool and England scoring a host memorable goals. As a fresh-faced 19-year-old, Owen bought himself a fully-loaded special edition Range Rover in 1999 for £62,000.

Boasting luxuries such as a Harmon Kardon sound system and full leather seats, the 4x4 was for sale on Auto Trader for just £6,995.

Shaun Wright-Phillips
England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has had a busy pre-season trying to cement a place in the Chelsea squad alongside the likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack and new signing Deco. The £21 million star’s old Range Rover was for sale in May and featured a Sony PlayStation 2, two DVD screens and a set of £1,500 alloy wheels.

It was on the market for £18,500 - £51,500 less than it cost in 2002.

Ian Wright
It’s a father and son double act with Wright Phillips’ dad Ian Wright also having a car appear on Auto Trader this year. The Arsenal legend’s old Aston Martin DB7 had the limited edition Alfred Dunhill kit on it which featured a humidor to carry the world’s finest cigars.

Just 78 were of the 165mph cars were built with Wrighty’s being the 14th registered model.

Cristiano Ronaldo
In April we featured Ronaldo’s old Porsche Cayenne which was on the market for £34,995. Powered by a 4.8-litre engine the Cayenne is a devastatingly-quick 4x4 with a top speed of 165mph. The German off-roader was snapped up within days of appearing on the site.

Wayne Rooney
Ronaldo’s partner in crime at United, Wayne Rooney is into cars as much as his Portuguese teammate. Rooney has owned a stack load of sports cars including a Lamborghini, Porsche and this Aston Martin Vanquish.

The 520bhp, 200mph British supercar came complete with the registration plate WAZ8 – and was on the market for £150,000. His old Mini GP was also for sale on Auto Trader in 2007.

Robbie Keane
Liverpool’s £20 million summer signing was at Spurs when his old Bentley Continental was up for sale on Auto Trader. The Republic of Ireland’s all-time top scorer was the first owner of the 560bhp British sports car which has a set of 20-inch alloy wheels and a top speed of 190mph.

Costing £120,000 new, the Bentley was on the market for £59,995.

Steven Gerrard
Looking to link up with Keane this season is his Liverpool captain and all-round Anfield hero Steven Gerrard. Auto Trader has had a host of Gerrard’s old cars for sale including a BMW X5 and Mercedes CLK320  but his range-topping Range Rover Sport HST was the most memorable.

Thirty minutes after doing the story on the 400bhp off-roader we got a phone call of the dealer to say it had been sold to a jubilant Liverpool and England fan.

Jermain Defoe
Adding even more firepower to the Auto Trader strike force is Portsmouth forward Jermain Defoe and his Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Defoe was a Spurs player when the car was for sale at the beginning of January. The 380bhp V8 Aston Martin was an ex demonstration model and was on the market for £61,985.
