Money-saving tip: Fill up at the pump correctly

Money-saving tip: Fill up at the pump correctly - Feature Image
Avoid pulling the trigger too tightly to begin with – gently squeeze and gradually fill the tank up instead

Filling up with a certain amount of fuel at a petrol station can help lower your fuel bill.

We show you how much to put in your tank and other money-saving advice at the petrol pump.

Try and keep your fuel level at around the halfway mark – a full tank will make your car heavy, and burn more fuel.

Avoid travelling miles for a garage which has only slightly cheaper fuel prices. It’s better to find a cheaper petrol station locally, if possible.

You should also avoid letting your car run on empty as this could result in an unnecessary car breakdown.

Petrol pump pointers

• Avoid pulling the trigger too tightly to begin with – gently squeeze and gradually fill the tank up instead

• Watch for the nozzle clicking off but the meter continuing to charge you money. It should only be a few pennies, but if it happens, let go of the nozzle and start it up again

• Release the trigger slowly before finishing. Keep the nozzle in your car for a few moments before releasing and placing back on the pump – this prevents any wasted drops of fuel

If the meter says fuel has been pumped before you even pull the handle, this is because of a worn interior part. When you hit the activate button, the pump draws in a bit of fuel to prime itself, but this should not cost you anything.
