11 August 2008 Alex Eckford went along to witness the largest ever gathering of XKs, and meet the motoring celebrities indulging in Big Cat nostalgia. Classic car fans were spoiled for choice this weekend. On the same days as the Cholmondely Pageant of Power, the Jaguar XK60 All Jaguar Festival took place at Goodwood, with more than 500 XKs are assembled for a unique celebration of the car’s 60th anniversary. Watch our slide show of action from the Jaguar XK60 celebrations now Jaguar owners and fans have arrived from all over the globe - including Australia, Canada, South Africa, the US, and all over Europe. And many of the owners are here to race their cars on the Goodwood Motor Circuit, with over 14 hours of racing taking place over the weekend. Among the racers is Britain’s great F1 driver of the 1950s and 1960s Sir Stirling Moss, who raced a Jaguar C-Type in 1950, is a man familiar with many of the classic cars on display here.
It’s easy to see why people are flocking to the show (despite the inclement weather) with rows and rows of classic C-Types, D-Types, E-Types, Lister Jaguars, numerous Le Mans-winning cars as well as more up-to-date models like the new XKR on show. Another famous face at the event is former racing commentator Murray Walker, who’s here to sign copies of ‘the Murray Walker Scrapbook’. So will he be doing any commentating over the weekend? “Absolutely not!” says Murray, “It’s a real specialist subject, and the last thing they need is some idiot blathering over the top of it!” Want to see a modern Jag in action?
